“Pysanka” Egg Decorating Workshop

On April 5th, a vibrant and hands-on Pysanka egg decorating class brought tradition, creativity, and community spirit together in a colorful celebration of Ukrainian folk art. Participants of all ages gathered to learn the intricate art of decorating eggs using the traditional wax-resist (batik) method. The class began with a brief history of Pysanky, highlighting their deep cultural symbolism and significance in Ukrainian Easter traditions.

Guided by a skilled instructor, Martha Tabak, attendees used specialized tools called *kistky* to apply beeswax to raw eggs in intricate patterns. Layer by layer, vibrant dyes were added, revealing mesmerizing designs as the wax was melted off to unveil the final masterpiece. “I attended the pysanky workshop with my daughters and cousin, and had a delightful experience. Our eggs may not have been perfect, but the opportunity to bond with family while passing on a cherished art and tradition was truly special. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves” - said pysanka class student, Jenn Janusis Spicer. Supplies were provided, and participants were able to take home their beautifully crafted eggs along with a deeper appreciation for this centuries-old art form. The workshop also fostered a sense of cultural connection and artistic expression, making it a memorable experience for all involved. By the end of the session, each egg told its own unique story, reflecting the creativity and care of its maker.
